Mem0 alternatives in 2026: six AI memory layers compared

Six Mem0 alternatives compared on memory model, pricing, self-hosting, MCP and compliance: Zep, Supermemory, Cognee, Letta, LangMem and OctaMem.

Mem0 is the default answer to "how do I give my agent memory", which is exactly why so many teams end up looking past it. The reasons are usually specific: a feature that sits on a higher tier, a compliance report procurement needs, or wanting more control over what gets written. This guide compares six alternatives on those specifics, and says plainly where Mem0 is still the better choice.

We build one of the alternatives, OctaMem, so read that section with that in mind. Every price, licence and capability below was checked on the vendor's own pricing page, docs or GitHub repository on 12 October 2026. This category changes its pricing every few months, so check again before you commit.

Why teams look for a Mem0 alternative

Mem0 is a good product. It has the largest open-source community in the category (Apache-2.0, about 67,000 GitHub stars), a free tier, Python and TypeScript SDKs, a hosted MCP server, and plugins for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. The reasons people switch are narrower than "it doesn't work":

  • Tier gating. Graph memory and memory consolidation are Pro-tier features at $249/mo. Audit logs and on-prem deployment are Enterprise-only.
  • How memory is written. Mem0 decides what to remember: its research page describes single-pass, ADD-only LLM extraction. Teams that want to declare memories explicitly, or need contradicting facts handled as supersession rather than as two stored facts, look elsewhere.
  • Compliance paperwork. Mem0 states SOC 2 Type 1, HIPAA and GDPR. Some procurement processes require a Type II report.
  • Architecture fit. Teams that need temporal reasoning ("what was true in March?"), a knowledge graph over documents, or an agent runtime rather than a memory API are shopping for a different shape of product.

The alternatives, one by one

Zep: when facts change over time

Zep builds a temporal context graph for each user, customer or domain, on its open-source Graphiti framework. Facts carry dates and are invalidated rather than overwritten when they change, which makes Zep strong at "what did we know, and when" questions. It now positions itself as a context layer for enterprise data, bills per ingested episode (retrieval and storage are free), and offers Python, TypeScript and Go SDKs plus an official Context MCP server with plugins for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

Choose it if temporal reasoning is central and you want a completed SOC 2 Type II report today. Watch for: the self-hosted Community Edition is deprecated, so self-hosting means running Graphiti and a graph database yourself, or BYOC on Enterprise.

Supermemory: memory plus document retrieval

Supermemory pairs a per-user memory graph with SuperRAG, its document extraction and retrieval product, behind one credit-based bill. It is MIT-licensed, runs a remote MCP server with OAuth sign-in, and has plugins for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode. Self-hosting starts on the $399/mo Scale tier, with air-gapped deployment on Enterprise.

Choose it if you want memory and RAG over documents from one vendor, with a low entry price. Watch for: credits are spent at different rates for memory, RAG, search and operations, so model your real workload before comparing headline prices. Our Supermemory vs Mem0 comparison goes deeper.

Cognee: open-source knowledge graph memory

Cognee is an open-source agent memory platform that builds a knowledge graph alongside vectors, all in a single Postgres. Its pricing is the simplest here: free up to 1M tokens, then $1 per million processed tokens, with enterprise sold as BYOC engagements. It has an official MCP server for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex, and connectors for sources like Slack, Notion, Linear and Google Drive.

Choose it if you want to self-host an open-source memory engine and your memories come largely from documents and tools. Watch for: we found a GDPR seal but no SOC 2 or HIPAA claim on Cognee's site, and only a Python SDK.

Letta: an agent runtime, not a memory API

Letta (from the MemGPT team) is a different shape of product: an agent harness where agents manage their own memory blocks and a git-versioned memory filesystem. It is open source under Apache-2.0, runs locally or as a self-hosted App Server, and exposes a hosted MCP server that lets Claude Code or Cursor create and delegate to Letta agents.

Choose it if you want the agent runtime and its memory as one system. Watch for: if you already have an agent framework and only want a memory layer behind it, Letta asks you to adopt more than that. We found no compliance claims on its site.

LangMem: a library for LangGraph teams

LangMem is LangChain's MIT-licensed Python library for extracting, consolidating and updating agent memory, with native integration into LangGraph's long-term memory store. It is a library rather than a service: free to use, hosted through LangSmith if you want it managed.

Choose it if you are already on LangGraph and want memory inside the same stack. Watch for: it is early (version 0.0.x), Python-only, and we found no official MCP server or coding-agent plugins.

OctaMem: typed, auditable memory (ours)

OctaMem stores the three types of agent memory (semantic, episodic and procedural) as distinct record types. When a fact changes, the old record stays queryable and marked superseded, every record carries provenance back to its source, and deletion propagates to derived records. Access is REST API, Python and JavaScript SDKs, a hosted MCP server, and an official plugin for Claude Code and Codex, with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 connectors on every plan.

Choose it if you need provenance, supersession and deletion to hold up under review, or expect to need on-prem. Watch for: there is no free tier (plans start at $49/mo), it is not open source, and our SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 audits are in progress rather than complete, as our trust page states.

What the benchmark numbers do and don't tell you

Every vendor here publishes a benchmark score, and several dispute each other's. On LoCoMo, the most cited, the published figures are:

VendorLoCoMo (as published)Published by
Zep94.7%Zep, in a comparison that reports Mem0 at 91.6%
OctaMem93.51% (1,440 of 1,540 questions)OctaMem, with per-category results
Mem092.5Mem0's research page
Letta74.0% (filesystem only, gpt-4o-mini)Letta, as a baseline argument

These runs use different judges, models and question subsets, so the ranking in this table is not a fair comparison, including our own row. Treat any single number as a claim to reproduce, not a result. Our benchmarks explainer covers what LoCoMo, LongMemEval and BEAM actually measure.

Whatever the shortlist, run the same tests on each trial account: write two contradicting facts and ask which is true, delete a source and check what else disappears, and time a retrieval under load. Our buyer's checklist has ten tests of that kind, each runnable in under an hour.

Moving off Mem0

  • Export your existing memories through Mem0's API and keep the user and agent identifiers attached.
  • Decide how they map onto the new system's model: facts, events and procedures, or graph entities.
  • Dual-write for a period, so new memories land in both systems while you compare answers.
  • Re-run the contradiction and deletion tests on the migrated data before you cut over.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Mem0 alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. Zep is the strongest choice for temporal reasoning, Supermemory for memory plus document retrieval, Cognee for self-hosted open source, Letta if you want an agent runtime, LangMem inside LangGraph, and OctaMem for typed memory with provenance and deletion.

Is there an open-source alternative to Mem0?

Yes. Cognee and Letta are Apache-2.0, Supermemory and LangMem are MIT, and Zep's Graphiti framework is Apache-2.0 (Zep Cloud itself is not). Mem0 is also open source, so the question is usually which architecture fits, not which licence.

Which Mem0 alternative has the strongest compliance?

As of 12 October 2026, Zep states SOC 2 Type II with a HIPAA BAA on Enterprise, and Supermemory states SOC 2, HIPAA and GDPR. Mem0 states SOC 2 Type 1. OctaMem's SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 audits are in progress. Always ask for the current reports.

Is Zep better than Mem0?

For temporal questions, Zep's dated context graph is the better fit. For a free start and the largest open-source community, Mem0 is. Our Mem0 vs Zep vs OctaMem comparison covers the head-to-head in more detail.

Does OctaMem have a free tier?

No. OctaMem starts at $49/mo on the Builder plan, which includes 5,000 memory operations and 10 GB of storage. Most alternatives in this guide start at zero.
